Choosing the Right Smoke Alarm for Las Vegas Homes

Different types of smoke alarms detect
different kinds of fires. To get utmost protection, you should install at least
one ionization type and one photoelectric type of fire alarm inside Las Vegas homes.

Ionization type alarms detect fast flaming
fires that consume combustible materials quickly and spread quickly. These
types of fires generate a large amount of heat, but a small amount of smoke.
The most common causes of fires of this type are flammable liquids, newspapers,
paint, and cleaning solutions. Since ionization-type smoke alarms detect fast
spreading fires, they are best suited for rooms and areas which contain highly
combustible materials like kitchens, workrooms, home offices, basement storage,
and garages.

On the other hand, slow spreading fires
trigger photoelectric smoke alarms. These slow fires produce a lot of smoke but
little flame or heat. They may smolder for hours in large pieces of furniture
before bursting into flames. This type of alarm is best suited in living rooms,
bedrooms, and kitchen.

It’s best to install one ionization and one
photoelectric smoke alarm on every level of Las Vegas homes, especially near sleeping areas and kitchens.

Replace the batteries every year or when
they beep from time to time. Avoid using rechargeable batteries since they lose
their charge without emitting any warning signals.

Test the alarms monthly by pressing the
test button. Once a year hold a burning cotton, cigarette, or incense until the
smoke alarm sounds. If the alarm is no longer reliable, replace it. Every five
years or so, replace all the alarms in Las Vegas homes.

Make sure that everybody in the house
recognizes the fire alarm and knows what to do in case of a fire.
