Las Vegas Homes News: Paradise Elementary Science Teacher Receives National Recognition

A new reason to
celebrate living in Las Vegas homes is
the fact that, aside from living in a great place, you also benefit from the
excellenct education that the region offers.

The Presidential
Award for Excellence in Science Teaching was recently awarded to a second-grade
life science teacher at Paradise Elementary School. It was the highest national
recognition for a K-12 science teacher.

In a ceremony
attended by President Barack Obama at the White House on May 6, Arlene Hayman,
58, was honored in the said ceremony. It was an all expense paid trip to
Washington to interact with teachers from across the nation. The event that
capped the recognition was also a tour of government agencies such as the
Environmental Protection Agency and NASA.

There are only two
teachers that were chosen from Nevada: Hayman and Janda Lannigan-Piekarz, who
is a math teacher at Duncan Elementary School. Hayman was one of the 85 math
and science teachers from all over the country who received the $10,000 award
in 2010.

Approved by the Congress
in 1983, the Presidential Award is managed by the National Science Foundation
on behalf of the White House’s science and technology policy office. From the
states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories, the president
may bestow the award to at most two teachers – one teacher in mathematics
and one in science.

Hayman has submitted a teaching video and five essays to apply for an award.
The essays and the video she has submitted cover a variety of aspects of her
teaching philosophy.

Hayman gives her
students living in Las Vegas homes an
authentic learning experience while working side by side with the Nevada Wildlife
Department. She affirms that children can connect more with that kind of
experience and they will learn more because it’s important to them.

Hayman is planning
to use the $10,000 award to help her daughter finish college.

This is just another
factor to really consider having a Las
Vegas home
aside from having great entertainment options and being a proud holder of one
of the world’s greatest desert landscapes.
