Protect Las Vegas Homes From Lightning Damage
The summer season not only provides natural
beauty, it also brings about severe thunderstorms and violent lightning.
At an average, a lightning strike contains
a current of 30,000 amperes and is about 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. In the
United States alone, lightning storms causes more injury, death and property
damage each year than all the hurricanes tornadoes and floods combined.
Lightning strikes in Las Vegas homes
can leave a devastating impact on the family even
if nobody is injured. While it’s true that lightning losses are generally
covered in most insurance policies, some damaged properties simply can’t be
restored.
Here are some guidelines on how to protect
yourself and Las Vegas homes
from
lightning damage:
Seek shelter. Lightning can jump off from a
tree to a person. If you are caught outside, avoid tall objects like trees,
poles, flagpoles, or other vertical conductors. Put down anything metallic that
you may be holding.
If your hair is standing on ends, drop to
your knees, bend forward and place your hands on your knees. Do not lie flat on
the ground. Rubber soled shoes will not protect you.
Avoid appliances, telephones and water. The
current caused by the lightning can reach through a person using anything
electric or corded, and any running water.
To protect Las Vegas homes, get a whole-house surge protection. Install surge
breakers on the main panel board or ask your utility to install surge
suppression at the meter.
Equip critical electronic devices such as
telephones, computer, and garage openers with individual transient voltage
suppressors. The best protection for any electronic
device is to simply unplug it during a lightning storm.
